Mocha Chip Frappe

I’m a devoted coffee lover and enjoy it in many forms: black, mocha, caramel, hot, cold, white chocolate, dark chocolate — you name it. One of my favorite indulgences is a blended coffee treat, and this Mocha Chip Frappe is an easy, budget-friendly version you can make at home in minutes.

If you’re wondering what a frappe is, it’s essentially a partly frozen beverage — a creamy, icy drink that’s blended until frothy. You don’t need to buy an expensive café version to get that same texture and flavor. With a few simple pantry ingredients and a blender, you can recreate a delicious mocha chip frappe without the long lines or high price tag.

To keep things quick, I use instant coffee. Instant coffee allows you to skip brewing and cooling time: add it straight to the blender with the other ingredients and blend. The result is an iced, frothy drink that tastes like something from a specialty coffee shop but takes only a moment to prepare.

Chocolate chips give this frappe its “chip” character — those little pockets of melted chocolate that surprise you as you sip. You can omit the chips if you prefer a smoother texture, but they’re a small touch that makes the drink more fun and satisfying. I usually finish mine with a cloud of whipped cream, a sprinkle of mini chocolate chips, and a light drizzle of chocolate syrup to mimic that café aesthetic, though toppings are optional.

You can prepare this frappe with whatever milk you prefer—dairy or plant-based. I keep a variety in the fridge: skim, whole, vanilla almond, and unsweetened coconut milk. Use dairy-free milk and dairy-free chocolate products for a vegan version, or choose whole milk for a richer texture. The recipe is very flexible and adapts to what you have on hand.

If you like experimenting with coffee at home, try making your own flavored creamers or other blended coffee drinks for variety. This mocha chip frappe is an easy base to customize: add flavored syrups, use flavored milks, or switch the chocolate to white chocolate chips for a different take.

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 C milk of choice
  • 2 heaping Tbsp instant coffee
  • 1/4 C chocolate fudge sauce
  • 3 C ice cubes
  • 1/2 C chocolate chips
  • whipped cream for topping optional
  • chocolate syrup for topping optional
  • mini chocolate chips for topping optional

Instructions

  • Add the milk, instant coffee, chocolate fudge sauce, and ice cubes to a blender. Blend for about 1 minute until smooth and frothy. Add the chocolate chips and blend for an additional 10–15 seconds so the chips break up slightly but remain chunky for texture.
  • Pour the frappe into glasses. Top with whipped cream, a sprinkle of mini chocolate chips, and a drizzle of chocolate syrup if desired. Serve immediately while cold and frothy.

Notes

For a dairy-free version, use your favorite non-dairy milk and dairy-free chocolate sauce and chips. Adjust the amount of instant coffee to suit your preferred strength.
