Why You’ll Love This Recipe

This hot dog fried rice is a fast, satisfying meal the whole family will enjoy. Savory hot dogs, fragrant ginger and garlic, and fluffy rice combine into a comforting stir-fry that’s simple to make. It’s also a one-pan recipe, so prep, cooking, and cleanup are all quick and easy.

The recipe began as a way to use leftover rice and a few hot dogs, and it quickly became a household favorite. The hot dog pieces add a smoky, savory note that pairs nicely with the sweetness of carrots and peas. It’s a great option for busy nights when you want something ready in under 30 minutes.

Ingredients You’ll Need

ingredients for hot dog fried rice including white rice, hot dogs, and veggies
  • Rice: Day-old cooked rice works best because it’s drier and separates easily when stir-frying. You can also use cauliflower rice (see substitutions).
  • Hot dogs: Choose a good-quality hot dog—grass-fed if possible—for the best flavor.
  • Avocado oil: Or another neutral cooking oil.
  • Toasted sesame oil: A small splash gives authentic fried rice flavor.
  • Onion and carrots: These build a flavorful base and add color and texture.
  • Garlic and ginger: Fresh minced garlic and grated ginger add aromatic depth.
  • Eggs: Whisked eggs create ribbons of protein and help bind the rice.
  • Frozen peas: Add sweetness and color; swap for green onions for Whole30.
  • Tamari sauce: Provides umami; use coconut aminos for paleo/Whole30 or soy sauce if not gluten-free.
  • Optional garnish: Chopped green onions and toasted sesame seeds.

How to Make This Hot Dog Fried Rice

pouring avocado oil into a bowl of white rice

Step 1: Drizzle 1 tablespoon toasted sesame oil over the rice and stir to coat. This adds flavor and helps separate the grains.

Substitutions to Make Paleo & Whole30 Fried Rice

You can easily make a paleo or Whole30 version by swapping a few ingredients:

  • Use 4 cups fresh or frozen cauliflower rice instead of cooked white rice. Because cauliflower rice is less starchy, add an extra cup if you want a fuller portion.
  • Replace frozen peas with chopped green onions for Whole30. Chopped green beans can also work—add them with the onions and carrots since they need more time to cook.
  • Substitute tamari with coconut aminos for paleo/Whole30. Adjust quantities to taste since coconut aminos are less salty.
  • Feel free to add other vegetables you have on hand—bell peppers, broccoli, or corn all work well—just stagger additions by cooking time.

How to Store and Reheat Leftovers

Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Glass containers work well to avoid any plastic flavor.

To reheat, a quick stir-fry in a hot skillet for 3–4 minutes restores texture best—add a splash of water if it seems dry. Microwaving for 1–2 minutes (stir once halfway) works if needed but may make the rice softer.

This recipe is great for meal prep: make a double batch, portion into containers, and enjoy easy lunches all week.

Recipe FAQs

Can I use freshly cooked rice instead of day-old rice?

Yes. Day-old rice is ideal because it’s drier and less sticky, but you can use freshly cooked rice if you spread it on a baking sheet and chill it for about 30 minutes to dry slightly before stir-frying.

How do I keep hot dogs from getting rubbery?

Avoid overcooking: add hot dogs after the vegetables have softened and cook them for only a couple of minutes before adding garlic and ginger.

Can I make this without eggs?

Yes. The eggs add protein and help bind the rice, but you can omit them and still have a tasty dish.

What vegetables pair well with hot dog fried rice?

This recipe is versatile. Try bell peppers, broccoli, green beans, or corn—just add vegetables according to their cooking times.
