Instead of buying new stockings each year, try making your own. This Christmas stocking sewing pattern is simple and quick to complete. Even beginners can produce several of these modern stockings in a short time.

This was my first time making stockings and I had more fun than I expected. The project felt much easier than I imagined — the pattern is straightforward, and sewing the shapes is surprisingly quick. Once you have the pattern drawn, assembly is a breeze.

The pattern included here creates medium-size stockings that are easy to resize. Increase or decrease the width and length by a couple of inches to make larger or smaller stockings. I find this medium size works well for most uses unless you expect an exceptionally generous Santa this year.

I made my stockings with lining, which makes them reversible — a simple way to change the look from year to year. The pattern also works unlined, but lining adds structure and a more finished appearance.

I used bright, modern fabrics for a playful look, but you can choose traditional prints or solids if you prefer a classic style. This project is perfect for using fabric scraps, making it both economical and eco-friendly.

Sewing one stocking took me less than half an hour; making three took about an hour total. The pattern has a few gentle curves, but they’re easy to sew and suitable for beginner sewers.

These stockings look great hung on a mantel or used around the house, and they also make thoughtful, handmade gifts. You can even use them as gift packaging for small presents. Ready to make your own Christmas stocking?

  • Lay the outer fabric wrong side out and position the pattern on the fabric.
  • Using a seam gauge, mark a 1/2″ seam allowance around the pattern with a fabric marker.
  • Fold the fabric under the marked line and cut out the stocking shapes to produce two identical outer pieces.
  • Repeat the cutting process for the lining pieces.
  • Place the two outer stocking pieces right sides together, pin the sides and bottom, and sew, leaving the top open.

  • For the lining, follow the same steps but sandwich the ribbon or cord between the two lining layers at the location indicated on the pattern. Make sure the ribbon is tucked toward the inside of the lining so the hanging loop will be secure when finished.

  • Clip the outer curves by cutting notches on the outside curve and small clips on the inner curve. This reduces bulk and helps the stocking turn smoothly.

  • Trim seam allowances to about 1/4″ to reduce bulk, then turn the outer stocking right side out and press the seams flat.
  • Turn the top edge of the outer stocking inward about 1/4″.

  • Keep the lining wrong side out but fold the top edge out about 1/4″.
  • Slide the lining into the outer stocking, align the seams and top edges, and pin in place.

  • Sew around the top edge with a small 1/8″ seam allowance to secure the lining and outer stocking together.

  • Fold the top of the stocking about 1/4″ above the ribbon or cord so the loop is exposed, then hang and enjoy your handmade stocking.
