How to Make a Cozy Homemade Chai Latte Recipe

Homemade Chai Tea Latte is an easy, cozy fall drink that warms you from the inside out. Bold chai spices become rich and creamy when combined with your preferred milk and a touch of vanilla and sweetener. Use cinnamon, cloves, ginger and nutmeg for that classic chai flavor.

If you enjoy tea, this latte is an ideal pick-me-up. I love a warm cup in the morning, mid-afternoon, or before bed to relax. It pairs beautifully with a pumpkin muffin or a slice of bread.

Making chai at home lets you control the ingredients and adjust the flavor to your liking. For a stronger caffeinated treat, add a shot of espresso to make a dirty chai. You can also prepare this on the stovetop or in a pressure cooker/Instant Pot if you prefer.

How to Make a Chai Tea Latte

Stovetop instructions (quick and easy):

  1. Bring 1 cup water to a boil in a small saucepan.
  2. Add the ground spices (cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, allspice, cloves) and stir. If you use whole spices, plan to strain the liquid with a fine mesh strainer before serving.
  3. Remove the pan from the heat and add the tea bags. Let steep for about 5 minutes, then remove the tea bags and pour the brewed tea into your cup.
  4. In the same saucepan, combine the milk, vanilla and maple syrup (or honey). Warm the milk over medium-low heat until it simmers gently—do not boil. Froth the milk with a milk frother or an immersion blender for a creamy texture, or simply pour it warm into the brewed tea.
  5. Strain if necessary to remove any spice pieces. Garnish with a sprinkle of cinnamon, a star anise, whipped cream or a pinch of nutmeg.

Storage Tips

Store any leftover chai latte in an airtight container or mason jar in the refrigerator for up to 2–3 days. Reheat gently on the stove or in the microwave, and re-froth if desired.
