Strawberry Orange Banana Smoothie Recipe for Fresh Morning Energy

For her birthday last year we gave our college-age daughter Emily a NutriBullet blender. She loves smoothies but, on a college budget, couldn’t swing the $5–$6 daily habit at Jamba Juice. A NutriBullet made sense: the same great smoothies at home for a fraction of the cost. She was thrilled and spent her first week back on campus texting photos of her morning blends every day. I made this Strawberry Orange Banana Smoothie with Emily in mind — a straightforward mix of fruit, yogurt, a touch of honey and ice that she’s sure to enjoy.

orange juice concentrate.

My secret ingredient for this frothy breakfast drink is frozen concentrated orange juice. It brings a deeper citrus flavor without diluting the smoothie the way plain orange juice can. When Emily blends in the morning she sometimes adds mix-ins like chia seeds, flax, kale or other veggies — all tasty options — but for this recipe I kept it simple to preserve that pretty blush color.

adding bananas to the blender.

For body, froth and a potassium boost, an overripe banana is ideal. Pro tip: when bananas pass their prime, freeze them for later use in smoothies, banana bread or mashed recipes. In this batch the banana was slightly frozen when added, which helps chill and thicken the drink. A cup of fresh Florida strawberries at their sweet, juicy peak gives the smoothie a lovely pink hue.

Blend the strawberries, yogurt and honey together first, then add a few ice cubes and pulse until thick and creamy. Pour into two glasses and serve. Emily and I like an extra drizzle of honey on top for garnish — delicious.
