Singapore Sling Cocktail: Classic Recipe, History & How to Mix

How fun are vintage cocktails!?

Sometimes I get a little bored with the classic cosmopolitan or margarita. (But only sometimes, because I really, really, really love margaritas.) If you haven’t heard of the Singapore Sling, don’t worry — your cocktail glossary isn’t incomplete. The sling was created in 1915 at a hotel in Singapore and, over time, became overshadowed by pre-made bottled mixes.

The Singapore Sling relies on fresh citrus, which I adore. Fresh juice takes a little extra time and care, so some bars skip it in favor of sugary bottled mixers. Those mixes can hide a surprising amount of sugar — making your drink taste sweet but also increasing the likelihood of a rough morning after. Do yourself a favor and make a fresh version: your hangover will thank you.

If you want to try a sling, look for it at a tiki bar or make one at home. The balance of gin, fruit juices and a touch of grenadine creates a bright, refreshing cocktail that’s both nostalgic and satisfying. Enjoy!

Singapore Sling

Ingredients:

  • 2 ounces gin
  • 2 ounces pineapple juice
  • 1 ounce fresh lime juice
  • 1 ounce blood orange juice or orange juice
  • 2 teaspoons grenadine
  • Sparkling water, to top

Garnish:

  • Lime wedges
  • Maraschino cherries
  • Mint sprigs

Method:

Juice the citrus fruits and pour the juices into a tall mason jar or highball glass filled with crushed ice. Add the grenadine, gin and pineapple juice, then top with sparkling water. Give a gentle stir to combine the flavors, and finish with a lime wedge, a couple of maraschino cherries and a sprig of mint.

Cheers!
